ABOUT ALGHERO

GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION

Alghero is situated on the north west coast of the island of Sardinia on a large bay of crystal clear waters. It is definitely to be considered the turistic capital of the Coral Riviera.

Alghero  covers an area of 22,440 Km2 and a coastal outline of about 80 km . It has become one of the most interesting places in the Mediterranean Sea for its natural beauty, climate , history and art. The landscape varies from soft sandy beaches lined with dense pinewoods to sharp cliff tops , lonely bays, hidden creeks and grottos overlooking emerald green pools and night blue waters.

The port, once an important commercial port of call, is now a tourist harbour. The considerable development of the airport serves as a connection between the island and the mainland and in recent years has expanded into an international airport.

HISTORY

The ties between Alghero and what is considered to be the mother-country, Barcelona, are very strong even today. The catalan language is still spoken and can be read on street names, heard in popular songs and used in religious ceremonies.Numerous archeological discoveries in the region testify the presence of man from the Neolithic Age (6000-5000 B.C.);the over one hundred "Nuraghi" found throughout the territory are proof of settlements from the Nuragic Age. Other Nuragic, Phoenician, Punic and Roman remains are located in the area. The "Italian-Catalan town" or "Barceloneta of Sardinya" , according to some historians dates back to the year 1102 others believe it was founded in the second half of the XIII century by the Doria , a powerful family from Genoa. The strategic position , the fortified ramparts and towers made the town a stronghold that was the ambition of the Catalans who conquered and repopulated the town. Alghero became an important regular trading port on the routes to Cagliari and Sicily.Tradition can be seen in the works of art that the Coral Jewellers design, the filigree handicrafts and in other local goods made from cork ,straw and ceramics. Traditional costumes are often worn for local festivities in most parts of the island..

Alghero and surroundings

You can reach Alghero  by plane from most major  Italian and International  airports or take a  ferry from the mainland  to the ports of  Olbia, Golfo Aranci or Porto Torres. Alghero airport is a 15 minute drive from the town.
